WASHINGTON, DC — The Ripon Society hosted a luncheon discussion yesterday with Machalagh Carr, the General Counsel for House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, who shared her thoughts on the importance of government oversight and the role Congress may play in that regard if Republicans hold a majority on Capitol Hill next year.
“It’s no secret that Americans have lost confidence in their government,” stated Jim Conzelman, who serves as the President & CEO of The Ripon Society. “In fact, just this past June, the Pew Research Center released a poll which revealed that only 20% of people trust the government in Washington to do the right thing, and only 8% describe the government as being responsive to the needs of ordinary Americans.
“Make no mistake – inflation and the economy will be top priorities when voters cast their ballots this fall. But another priority will be making government more effective and accountable. We appreciate Machalagh for taking the time to join us yesterday to discuss not only how Republicans will achieve this goal if they retake control of Congress, but why it is so important for Constitutional oversight to once again become a priority on Capitol Hill.”

According to Conzelman, yesterday’s meeting was attended by a crowd of over 70 people and was the 35th event The Ripon Society has held so far in 2022. He added that The Ripon Society will host its next discussion on November 30th, when veteran bipartisan pollsters Ed Goeas and Celinda Lake will review the results of the mid-terms and discuss their upcoming book, A Question of RESPECT: Bringing Us Together in a Deeply Divided Nation.
