Ripon Society Holds Discussion with Dan Meyer, Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the House

WASHINGTON, DC – The Ripon Society held a lunch discussion yesterday afternoon with Dan Meyer, the Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, who shared his thoughts on the legislative agenda in Congress and some of the key challenges facing the American people in the coming year.

Meyer is a veteran of Capitol Hill, serving his second tour as the top aide to the House Speaker.  He previously served as Chief of Staff to then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, where he helped shepherd the Contract with America through the House and helped oversee the passage of landmark welfare reform legislation and the first balanced budget in nearly 30 years.  He later served as the White House Director of Legislative Affairs under President George W. Bush.  He returned to the Hill to take the reins as leader of McCarthy’s staff in 2019.

“Dan has been in the middle of virtually every important legislative debate over the past 30 years,” stated Jim Conzelman, who serves as President & CEO of The Ripon Society and spent nearly 30 years himself as the Chief of Staff for a House member on Capitol Hill.  “He is a pro’s pro, who has a firm grasp of policy, a good sense of relationships, and a keen understanding of what it takes to govern effectively and get things done in the House of Representatives.  We appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to join us.”

According to Conzelman, yesterday’s meeting was attended by a crowd of over 80 people and was the seventh event The Ripon Society has held so far in 2023. He added that the Ripon Society will host its next discussion on Tuesday, February 28th, when three new Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee – U.S. Reps. Troy Balderson (OH-12), Jay Obernolte (CA-23), and August Pfluger (TX-11) — will discuss their legislative priorities on the panel for 2023.

The Ripon Society is a public policy organization that was founded in 1962 and takes its name from the town where the Republican Party was born in 1854 – Ripon, Wisconsin. One of the main goals of The Ripon Society is to promote the ideas and principles that have made America great and contributed to the GOP’s success. These ideas include keeping our nation secure, keeping taxes low and having a federal government that is smaller, smarter and more accountable to the people.
